5 Ways to Tell: Is Your Photo Faking It?

5 Ways to Tell: Is Your Photo Faking It?

One of the most popular things my San Francisco Portrait Photography clients ask for is a good, candid shot. They then often proceed to explain in detail exactly what “candid” looks like.  They seem to have every detail considered; what they want to wear, what they want to convey, etc....
Basic Make-Up Tips for Photo Shoots

Basic Make-Up Tips for Photo Shoots

Because I specialize in natural portraits in San Francisco, a topic of discussion that comes up with my female clients quite frequently is make-up. I had been somewhat avoiding the subject because for me it feels rather sensitive and personal to each individual. Sometimes I get in touch with just...

LinkedIn Photos & the San Francisco Job Market

The digital age has certainly changed the way we do business. It has changed the way our customers find us, communicate and buy from us. The internet forces even the most tactile businesses (such as massage therapists) to communicate in words and pictures on a screen to express who they...

I Am Not Photogenic!

I Am Not Photogenic!

It seems there are two types of people: those that look great in almost every photo they are in, and then, there are the rest of us. As a photographer (and a person who for the majority of my life considered myself “un-photogenic”) I have noticed that there are lots...
Getting Naked

Getting Naked

I have found that the best way to get natural photos of my clients is to help them to get naked. Its important to avoid the fake smile, the one I call “the mask”. It’s that pose we all snap into whenever anyone utters the phrase, “Say cheese!” This expression...

How About We: Taking Dating Offline

How About We: Taking Dating Offline

As an online dating photographer, I get to hear all sorts of dating successes and struggles. On some level, most of us wish that the man or woman of our dreams would just walk through the door of our gym, sit next to us at the bar or start up a fascinating conversation at a friend’s party. But, after spending enough time with that not happening, many people decide to take fate into their own hands and look online. It’s a big world and everyone is doing it, right? Most of my clients are already on Match.com or OkCupid.com, but are looking for something  more simple and less time consuming. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a online dating website where you could just post your favorite natural photos and not have to fill out endless survey questions? And, instead of the long online courtship of impersonal messaging, you could just meet up with...

What Camera Do I Use?

What Camera Do I Use?

I often get asked what kind of camera I use. The quick answer is a Nikon D800. Like most professional photographers I use a DSLR camera with a full frame sensor. The full frame sensor allows me to shoot in most lighting conditions, even in very low light without having to use a flash or any artificial light. I find that being able to use natural light works really well for both online dating photos and corporate head shots. I know that when I’m getting my picture taken, I feel a lot more comfortable without a blinding bright flash going off. And feeling comfortable is a huge key to looking good in photos. Here is a closer look: 1. Nikon D800: I love this camera. It has a full frame sensor which makes it very sensitive to light, and allows me to take all my portraits in soft natural light. Although after a full day, I have...

The Pursuit of Perfection

The Pursuit of Perfection

Have you ever had a crisis of confidence? Cancelled something important because you didn’t feel “ready”? Got cold feet at the last moment? That moment before you take a leap of faith can be scary. And the day before you share yourself in a new way can be downright terrifying. In our society, there is one concept in particular that seems to have the biggest effect on women’s confidence and perceived sense of self. It lies in the simple question: What is real beauty? As women, we get the message, “You are supposed to be attractive.” The media is clear about this. But while the prescription is understood, many are often left feeling like the standard by which they are being held to is both confining and unrealistic. Shouldn’t beauty be defined on an individual basis instead of collectively? As a photographer I understand the power of re-touching. And I am left to wonder: Why...

Then Came Instagram- From Weekly Shot to Photo a Day

Then Came Instagram- From Weekly Shot to Photo a Day

As a social media photographer, I have seen a few fads come and go. Sometimes it seems like every other week there is a new “latest thing” that everyone is excited about. And then, as quickly as it came, the new social forum often disappears. I found the entrance of Instagram to the social market to be interesting, especially as a photographer. When I am not taking professional profile pictures or online dating photos I still like to take interesting snaps of my world. The first way I used to share this was on my professional facebook page in the form of the Weekly Shot. But then came Instagram.   I signed up for it a while ago, and then, like many other social media profiles, I forgot all about it. Recently I revisited my page, and became inspired by all of the fun, natural and candid photos on the site. I noticed a lot...
