One of the keys to enjoying life is expression. Experiencing the freedom to not only identify what you want and need but having the power to convey it, is an invaluable ability. That’s one of the reasons I love dancing. Its very essence is an open, visual way to show emotions, thoughts and impulses to the world. A photo of mine is currently being featured on the cover of the most recent issue (published Sept 15th) of Conscious Dancer magazine. Conscious Dancer is a quarterly active lifestyle magazine that celebrates transformative dance, mind-body fitness, and energy movement arts. I had such a great time during my photo session with co-founder, Aspen Madrone, her daughter Geneva, as well as Anjali Sawhney and her family. As a social media and corporate photographer, I have the unique opportunity to see a lot of things. But recently I was asked to do something different. I was invited to photograph a yoga retreat taking place in the backcountry of Yosemite National Park. The offer combined my love of backpacking, nature, yoga and photography so I gladly accepted. I realized it to be a great opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just, be. At 6:30 am on the first day, 12 people, most of whom didn’t know each other, woke up and started hiking into the forest. In the midst of a 5 mile walk, we slowly began to learn about each other. As we relaxed into the new environment, we were eventually surrounded by a harmonious combination of fresh friends and untouched wilderness. It was a stunning natural setting. Everyone keeps asking me, “What’s the secret to a great photo?” I tell them it’s lots of things. The location, the wardrobe, the lighting and angles of course. You need to feel comfortable and happy with yourself and the person taking the photo. But beyond all that, actually, the answer is even simpler. The secret to a great photo is individual. You have to ask yourself, “What do I want to say with this picture?” Do you remember that thing when we were kids, show and tell? That’s the main premise behind an online profile of any kind whether it is for LinkedIn or Match.com. The text is supposed to tell who you are and what you want and the picture is supposed to show it. So here is what I recommend before you get photos taken: make a list of your top words.
