Redefining Women Online: Can Stock Photos Really Change Perception?

Women Making A Wish

When I first heard about the book ‘Lean In’ by Sheryl Sanberg I was sure it wasn’t for me. I assumed it encouraged corporate women to work crazy hours, take time away from their families and basically just work harder in order to be ‘successful’.

Even though I wrote it off, I just kept hearing about this book. So, after a few months of good reviews, I decided to give it a chance and see what all the fuss was about. I’m half way done, and so far, the book is actually pretty great! Contrary to my previous thoughts, it’s more of a discussion about women in the modern workplace and how we can often sabotage ourselves and hold ourselves back. The book encourages women to value their contributions in the office as well as the home. A main theme is to inspire women to strive for leadership positions and speak their truth in whichever industry they choose. I can definitely get on board with all of that!

Sanberg and her non-profit, LeanIn.org, are leading by example and launching a new gallery of stock photos on Getty images, which embody the themes of confidence, success and fulfillment that are highlighted in her book. If you’ve ever had to look for stock photos of a workingwoman, you would know that there are a plethora of oversized gray suits in stark studio environments on offer. Some of these new photos include: women of a variety of ages, women in fashionable clothing and modern offices, men caring for children and women operating heavy machinery. These images are an attempt to change the way we view women in the world and in the workplace. I feel it is definitely a step in the right direction!

Creative Woman Headshot San Francisco

Being a corporate photographer, the feel of the stock image gallery really resonated with me. Some of the photos felt similar to the photos I have taken for some of my clients. To me, it is just more proof that business photos are evolving and both men and women are redefining their online image. We can be stylish, unique AND professional.
